My wife and I enjoy spending time in Roanoke, Virginia — a city that’s perfect for those who love the great outdoors. Among the many things to see and do in Roanoke is Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden.
These Roanoke botanical gardens are situated near Mill Mountain Star, which overlooks the city.

The Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden is located atop Mill Mountain in Roanoke. It’s perhaps most famous for its eight-story-tall landmark, the Mill Mountain Star — also known as the Roanoke Star. Nearby is the Mill Mountain Zoo, a popular attraction for families.
The History Of Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden
Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden began in 1971 as a dream. The city of Roanoke commissioned the Mill Mountain Garden Club to propagate a wildflower garden on Mill Mountain. By the mid-1970s, the land was graded, irrigation lines were in, and the stage was set for the garden to grow in a public park setting.
Three dozen trees were planted, but there were major hurdles along the way. For starters, the city inadvertently planted stubborn grass across the entire 2.5-acre parcel designated for the garden. In September 1975, Hurricane Eloise destroyed pathways that were carved throughout the garden. Soon, poison ivy inundated the garden, and even forest fires and a drought scourged the area. Undeterred, the Mill Mountain Garden Club carried on.
More than a half century after the Mill Mountain Garden Club set to work on building one of the best botanical gardens in Roanoke, the garden overlooking the city blooms as vibrantly as ever. Many dedicated volunteers and loyal members help support the Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden, which hosts tens of thousands of visitors each year.

The Roanoke gardens also offer unmatchable vistas. I never been to a mountaintop garden like this one. Views of the Blue Ridge Mountains are visible from virtually every direction atop Mill Mountain.

Still, the wildflowers are one of the prime attractions of this Roanoke botanical gardens. And they’re in full bloom from late spring through early fall.

Even pollinators such as birds and butterflies love this place!

I also hear the gnomes come out to play from time to time…

Everywhere you turn, there’s something new, different, or enchanting to see… Like this metalworks installation hearkening to the nearby Mill Mountain Star overlooking Roanoke.
